sign ordinance in Knoxville, TN will mean a more scenic city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The city of Knoxville, Tenn. has passed a new ordinance for regulating on-premise signs that will result in a much more scenic city in coming years. \u00a0The new rules are the result of four years of work and negotiations between city, community and business leaders, the sign industry and local scenic supporters led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scenicknoxville.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scenic Knoxville<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 2px 5px; border: 1px solid #5f5d5d; float: right;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/knoxville20skyline20sm1.jpg\" alt=\"inline_805_\/storage\/knoxville%20skyline%20sm.jpg\" width=\"296\" height=\"197\" \/>The city&#8217;s longstanding sign ordinance had allowed for on-premise signs as tall as 50 feet in most areas of the city, and as a result Knoxville\u2019s commercial corridors are teeming with unsightly sign clutter. \u00a0In 2011 the Knoxville City Council formed a sign task force to revise the ordinance and improve the appearance of the city. \u00a0Though the task force was heavily weighted with pro-sign members, two community representatives (including one member of Scenic Knoxville) made a significant impact on the task force&#8217;s recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>A first proposal sent to City Council in 2014 was far from the ideal that scenic supporters were hoping for. \u00a0Scenic Knoxville worked hard to organize community support for better sign control, and ultimately their efforts paid off. \u00a0On July 21, 2015 the Knoxville City Council passed a new sign ordinance that incorporated many of the provisions proposed by Scenic Knoxville and which will result in a much more beautiful city in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the provisions that scenic supporters fought for and received include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sign heights based on context of adjacent roadway<\/li>\n<li>Smaller sign sizes<\/li>\n<li>Protection for Scenic Highways<\/li>\n<li>Protection for office districts<\/li>\n<li>A procedure to remove dozens of abandoned signs throughout the city, including\u00a0a process that will more quickly remove &#8220;legal nonconforming&#8221; signs<\/li>\n<li>The replacement of nonconforming signs with a change in use of the property<\/li>\n<li>Many other provisions which will improve the appearance of Knoxville over time<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Scenic Knoxville and its supporters are to be congratulated for this long-fought and hard-won victory which will build on earlier successes to ultimately lead to a more beautiful city.\u00a0Previous victories by the group and its supporters include a ban on digital billboards in the city and in Knoxville county, and a prohibition on new on-premise electronic signs in the city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The city of Knoxville, Tenn. has
