Taking her husband\u2019s last name and dubbing herself Harriet, Tubman went on to become a powerful figure in American history, guiding enslaved people to freedom in the north, advocating for women\u2019s suffrage, and serving as a spy, scout, soldier, and nurse in the Union Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is most known for her time as a \u201cconductor\u201d of the <strong>Underground Railroad<\/strong>. Estimated to have operated from around 1810 to 1850, the <a href=\"https:\/\/education.nationalgeographic.org\/resource\/underground-railroad\">Underground Railroad<\/a> was a secret network by which escaped enslaved people sought freedom in the north. Around 100,000 of these so-called \u201cpassengers,\u201d or freedom seekers, successfully escaped slavery thanks to the Railroad and its conductors. Tubman was one of the most famous conductors. She was never caught, and never lost a single passenger.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/develop-scenic-america.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/20180227_Anacostia_Turner16-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17278\" width=\"422\" height=\"282\"\/><figcaption>The underground railroad in Sandy Springs, Maryland, photo courtesy of wamu.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the Civil War, she put her skills to work in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/why-harriet-tubmans-heroic-military-career-now-easier-envision-180975038\/\">Union Army.<\/a> She would disguise herself as an old woman, wander Confederate streets, and gather information from enslaved populations about Confederate troop positions and supply lines. In 1863, Tubman became the first woman in American history to lead a military assault\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/african-american-history\/combahee-river-raid-june-2-1863\/\">Combahee Ferry Raid,<\/a> which freed more than 700 enslaved people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her extraordinary life and accomplishments distinguished her as an icon of American history. You can drive it yourself or arrange for a guided tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Places to visit along the byway include the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center and the <strong>Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center.<\/strong> The Center was started in the 1990s by local community members wanting to promote Tubman\u2019s legacy. You can also visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adkinsarboretum.org\/programs_events\/a-journey-begins-underground-railroad.html\">Adkins Arboretum<\/a> and see their guided experience \u201cRooted Wisdom: Nature\u2019s Role in the Underground Railroad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here at Scenic America, we value these historic places and want them to see them persist.
